Have you ever had one of those mind-blowing moments where you are just sitting or eating, and then out of the blue, you get hit by this randomly fantastic idea that keeps replaying in your head so much that you have to tell someone, but then no one believes you because it sounds irrational? Well, that, my dear people, in the most lay terms I could find, is what the Chancellor of Covenant University felt like when the idea came to him. The idea of Covenant University, from the very buildings we learn, the chapel we worship, the residency area, down to the Wi-Fi we use, dropped into his thoughts 19 years ago. The establishment of this idea-turned project in one year remains a wonder to me. Each time I ask how I keep getting the same answer. You are wondering what that answer is correct? Well, then read on.

Coming into CU, I guess we could all relate to the never-ending reminder of this divine vision and the power it had over this commission. Every chapel service was like a microphone shouting the same thing over and over again. We probably had an earworm from the repetition. Over time, I just wanted to know why nobody stopped talking about how this place came to be. I wanted answers and wanted to know what the big deal was. Of course, as a student, I knew what other people had to say about the school or the general populace’s opinion. So I decided to sacrifice my free time, free some lazy days, to research. I had conversations with some lecturers so I could get hints in pulling the puzzle together.
You see, this “survey” taught me two things. First off, people are willing to talk to you about important things once you show interest in what they have to say. In all honesty, many of our lecturers are excellent conversationalists for people who lock doors and seize ID cards during class. Secondly, I found that beyond the purple ID cards and the general overuse of the “H factor,” the primary thing that grows inside a vast number of the staff and faculty is their love for this place and what it represents, the love for the vision of this university.

Now, back to the first question, how did this place come to be? You may think this sounds like pure nonsense, but 19-year-old school is doing pretty well ( severe understatement). The founding factor of what made this place what it is, the reason parents would drag their child and pay a million naira to the middle of a hot, dusty expanse of land, and leave them there, is what we know as is THE VISION. Now I don’t know a lot, but I know how to respect the resolve of someone to do amazing things, especially when I cannot compete with such will. I refuse to try calculating the amount of money the construction of this university used for my sanity and mental health because I cannot stress over money that is not my own.

Back to what I was saying, vision is what made this school what it is. It is the vision of raising a new generation of leaders. It drives most of the people you see wearing baggy suits and tired faces. Their drive to make this place so great sometimes affects us and not always in a good way. I can complain and shout and bant, but I won’t lie, they are doing their jobs, and they are doing okay for the most part. Of course, there’s a whole lot more to say, sadly I do not have enough time to tell you, so how about we call it a day.
